Letter "Yy" Recognition Craft Projects & Activities

We spend one week reinforcing each letter with crafts and activities after it is introduced.

"Yy" is for Yak Hats

We made these hats with a printable from Mailbox Magazine but you can also use the one from School Express...link provided below. Another simple way to make a yak hat is to use yellow construction paper to make yak horns on a band of construction paper. Then use glue, tape, or staples, to fasten the horns to the band. Show children a picture of a yak and talk about
Printable Yak Hat From School Express
This site also has a hat for every letter of the alphabet.

Carl's Corner Letter Y - This comes with a sheet to color, cut, and paste to the letter.

Letter Y & Yoyo Sponge Painting
Invest in some Alphabet and misc. sponges for crafts like this. They are about $2 or $3 per bag at Walmart. Also available from school supply stores. We use ours to make a page like this for every letter we are learning from September through May. Parents are encouraged to take them home and post them where the child can see and practice every day. When we finish the entire alphabet they can make them into a book or put them into a binder. Cut out a small yellow circle and attach yarn or string to make the yoyo.

Group Time Activity

Making Y's

Give children lengths of thick yellow yarn, yellow craft sticks, yellow ribbon, yellow buttons, etc. to form capital and lowercase y's on black construction paper. You may want to give children white chalk so they can lighlly draw their y's before gluing.

Yes For Y

Print Y and y on index cards and print other letters on several more cards. Sit in front of the children and hold up the cards one at a time. Whenever the children see a Y or y, have them say, "yes."
Yellow Day
Have children wear yellow and bring yellow things to share. Have a yellow snack.
